The Peter Lalor Hotel first opened for business on 9 July 1864 as the Royal Oak Hotel. It later became known as the Royal Highlander Hotel, and remained as such for many years until it acquired its present title in 1971 to honour the memory of the heroic leader of the Eureka Stockade uprising in 1854.
